Navigation Essentials
Details
Learn the essentials of map reading during a full day outdoors to give you the skills you need to confidently find your way around the countryside.
There is also the option of joining a Bronze NNAS award weekend and completing two days of introductory navigation training without being assessed for the award. See the NNAS section of my website for more details.
We will start in a café with an introduction to maps and then head outside to learn basic techniques including:
– orientating the map
– using obvious handrails
– understanding map features and symbols
– measuring distances, timing and pacing
– safety, kit choices and the Countryside Code
Who is the course aimed at?
It is aimed at people with no navigation experience, whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes.
This is also a great refresher for those who may have done some navigation before, but are a little rusty, looking at using their skills to lead others or progressing to more advanced levels.

Personal clothing and equipment – you should dress appropriately for the weather. Make sure you have waterproofs, a warm layer, sturdy footwear, hat and gloves.
Booking:
Price is £50 per person (maximum 8 people). Full instructions and where to meet will be sent on booking, usually within 24 hours.
Alternatively you can book privately with full flexibility. Price is £150 full day for an individual or group up to 8 people. Contact me directly for dates and booking.

Intermediate and Advanced Navigation
Details
Join me for a full day of navigation, building on your existing basic skills so that you can feel confident in walking away from paths and tracks. The majority of these courses are on pre-set dates in the Chilterns, however, I run occasional days in both Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons, South Wales) and Eryri (Snowdonia, North Wales). We will do a recap of the basic skills and then head out for a full day honing the finer skills, including:
– compass bearings and back bearings
– walking off the paths
– aiming off, attack points
– understanding contours in more detail
– any other navigation skills you need or want to practice
There is also the option of joining either a Silver or Gold NNAS award weekend and completing two days of intermediate or advanced navigation training without being assessed for the award. See the NNAS section of my website for more details.
Who is the course aimed at?
For those who already have a basic understanding of map reading and want to develop and fine tune their skills. Venture off the paths with confidence and explore new terrain!

Details
The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance, non-competitive, incentive scheme for all ages to learn navigation skills and gain confidence to get out and enjoy the countryside.
You are welcome to join us on any of the NNAS award weekends and complete the two days of navigation training without being assessed for the awards. Either book straight on and let me know after booking or get in touch me with me first to discuss.
The Night Owl, Bronze and Silver courses are run in the Chilterns. Gold awards are run in Eryri, North Wales.
I can also offer private NNAS courses for your group – get in touch directly and I’ll be happy to discuss arrangements with you.
