Gold Navigation Award

The Gold Navigator Award is ideal for those people who are comfortable using map and compass skills in the hills and want to develop to an advanced level.  This course builds on those skills and adds more techniques and a deeper understanding of complex contour features, both large and small.  This is an advanced course and candidates should have completed either the NNAS Silver Award or equivalent (for example Mountain Leader training or Hill and Moorland Leader training).  Please get in touch with Angelina if you are unsure.

This is a two day course in upland terrain where conditions underfoot may include rocky ground, tussocks and boggy areas.  Candidates will be familiar with the challenges of walking away from paths and looking to develop those navigation skills needed for confidence and safety in these areas.

The Gold National Navigation Award includes pre- and post-course question papers.  These will be given to candidates when they book and the pre-course paper is completed as part of a discussion online about 2 -3 weeks prior to the practical weekend.

The NNAS Gold Navigator Award is accredited by the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 6, and 2 SCQF credit points are awarded on completion.  Gold courses are run by Course Directors who not only have plenty of top-level navigation experience but also have been on a special NNAS-run course in tutoring Gold courses.

Course Program:
The pre-course assessment paper is completed as part of a discussion online about 2 -3 weeks prior to the practical weekend.  This is usually about an hour and will help answer any questions about the weekend and help candidates prepare.

2 day practical weekend course meeting in Capel Curig, North Wales.

Start at 08:00 hrs each day and finish at approximately 15:00 – 16:00 hrs each day.

The practical assessment element of the weekend is combined throughout the two days with continual learning and fun!  There will be plenty of opportunities to learn, understand, practice and demonstrate the skills required to pass.

The post-course assessment paper is completed and followed by a final debrief with the assessor.
