Navigation Workshops from Beginner to Advanced
Details
In this one day workshop, I will tailor the day and practical learning to the needs of each individual. We meet in a cafe for introductions and then have a full day outdoors to give you the skills you need to navigate with confidence, whether that is the basic framework and essential skills, or moving on to more advanced techniques for walking away from paths in more remote terrain.
There is also the option of joining a Bronze NNAS award weekend and completing two days of introductory navigation training without being assessed for the award. See the NNAS section of my website for more details.
Topics covered will include just the right amount of skills that you need for your personal level of development in your navigation journey and the we will walk in an area that allows a variety of these to be practiced:
– orientating the map
– using obvious handrails
– understanding map features and symbols
– measuring distances, timing and pacing
– safety, kit choices and the Countryside Code
– compass bearings and back bearings
– walking off the paths
– aiming off, attack points
– understanding contours in more detail
– any other navigation skills you need or want to practice
Who is the course aimed at?
It is aimed at everyone from people with no navigation experience, new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes, right through to those who already have a basic understanding of map reading and want to develop and fine tune their skills. This is also a great refresher for those who may have done some navigation before, but are a little rusty, looking at using their skills to lead others or progressing to more advanced levels.
